About the customer

Reuse of industrial rinse water - Powder coating

All kinds of goods are painted, from 2x4 meter doors to very small items like clamps. The goods to be treated often arrive in Leba with machine-treated surfaces that are contaminated with oil, metal particles and other foreign materials. In some cases, the goods have also rusted. To ensure that the goods receive a high-quality surface treatment, professional pre-treatment is required. The pre-treatment consists of degreasing, phosphating and passivation. After these three steps, it is of utmost importance that the goods are completely clean and this is achieved by rinsing with clean water. Since the goods are of such varying sizes and shapes and nine different types of paint are used, the composition of the dirty water is constantly changing. This is a fact that makes a well-functioning water purification process of utmost importance. Previously, the polluted water went into the municipal sewer without purification. This is no longer accepted by the authorities and therefore Leba has been forced to build a complete re-circulation system. They therefore turned to Toveko and the described facility was created. It has now been in operation for more than 12 years.

Current status

The used rinse water is precipitated/flocculated and filtered and reused for rinsing. To avoid bacteria developing, the water is UV disinfected. Sludge is taken from the sedimentation to a chamber filter press. Because the temperature of the rinse water is as high as 45-500C, a large part of the water evaporates. Therefore, approximately 20% of the water quantity must be added per loop. Before the reused rinse water is diluted, the water to be added must be treated in an ion exchanger to remove all salts. This is to avoid changing the salt balance.

Results

In order to be able to re-circulate the water, target values have been set for SS, oil, grease and phosphorus. The attached diagrams (for 1994) show what the treatment plant has achieved in comparison with the given values. The plant is operated with more than satisfactory margins.

The authorities' requirements: no wastewater may leave this factory.
