Falu city has about 23,000 inhabitants. Falun is one of Sweden's oldest cities and received city privileges as early as 1641. In the 13th century, copper mining began in Falun. The world's oldest limited company was founded and still has its seat in the city, Stora AB. Falu city is located in a "cauldron" surrounded by mountains. Some are so high that ski jumps have been set up. Among other things, Lugnet's sports venue is known for its ski games and various ski jumping competitions. The city's location makes it particularly sensitive to air pollution. For heating, they have therefore invested in district heating.
The district heating center is mainly fired with forest waste, i.e. biofuels. The firing takes place in a boiler with a fluidized bed, which means that the boiler is partially filled with sand. Fuel and air are supplied to the hearth continuously. Firing is then carried out at a relatively "low" temperature. This means that minimal nitrogen pollution is formed. The facility is in operation from mid-September to early June each season. During the summer period, the heating takes place with gas or electricity for cost reasons. Preparation for the installation of a smaller briquette boiler is underway.
In order to even out the variations during peak load periods, an accumulator tank has been built into the system. It holds 8,400 m3 of hot water, which corresponds to 300 MWh.
During high load, 50 m3 of fuel is consumed per hour. This means that a truck with a trailer must fill up with fuel every two hours. The fuel is collected within a radius of 5 miles from Falun. The fuel contains about 50% of moisture. The moisture turns into a gas phase in connection with the firing. Energy is consumed during this process. The moist flue gas is led to a flue gas cooler for condensation. In connection with the condensation, the energy previously consumed in the gasification phase is recovered. The liquid formed during the condensation helps to wash the flue gas. Only a little residual condensation remains in the outgoing gas. Only a little white water vapor comes out of the chimney. However, the condensate contains soot particles that must be cleaned before it can be released further. The susphalt content in the water from flue gas condensation varies between 50-100 mg/l. This water is pumped directly to a Toveko CX filter, in this case an S-150 filter. The flow varies in relation to the load on the plant and varies between 13-15 m3/h at high load. At half load, the amount of condensate is approx. 10 m3/h.
In connection with the expansion of the boiler capacity in 2004, an additional S-150 filter was installed, ie a doubling of the purification capacity was carried out.
